Why it matters
A homage is a watch that openly takes its design cues from a more famous reference without claiming to be that watch. The case shape, dial layout, and bezel might closely echo a Submariner, a Royal Oak, or a Speedmaster, but the brand name on the dial is the homage maker's own. Homages exist because the underlying designs are popular and the originals are out of reach for most buyers.
The distinction that matters in dealer conversations is homage versus replica. A homage is its own product, sold openly under its own brand. A replica or counterfeit copies the design and the dial signature, intending to deceive. Selling a replica as the genuine watch is fraud. Selling a homage is not. On the secondary market, homages trade at a fraction of their original retail because buyers know the design is borrowed. Watch out for sellers who list homages alongside genuine references in a way that obscures the difference.
Common questions
- What is a homage watch?
- A homage watch is a timepiece that openly references the design of a more famous watch (case shape, dial layout, bezel) while branding itself under its own name. Homages are legal and sold openly. Counterfeits, which copy the design and the original brand's signature, are not.
- Is a homage the same as a fake?
- No. A homage carries its own brand name on the dial and is sold transparently as its own product. A fake or counterfeit copies the design and the original brand's signature, intending to pass as the real watch. Homage is legal; counterfeit is not.
