Why it matters
A complication is any function on a watch beyond telling the local time. Date, day, GMT, chronograph, moon phase, perpetual calendar, alarm, repeater, and tourbillon are all complications. Watchmakers grade complications loosely as simple, useful, and grand. A simple complication is a date or day-date. A useful complication is a chronograph or a GMT. A grand complication combines a perpetual calendar, a chronograph, and a minute repeater on the same movement.
For buyers, the question is not how many complications a watch has but whether they will actually use them. Complications that get used add real value to ownership. Complications that sit unused for months become service liabilities. A watch with a chronograph that has not been operated in years can have a stuck mechanism that costs hundreds to repair. A perpetual calendar that has been allowed to run down can take hours to reset correctly. Match complications to use cases; do not buy them as collectibles unless that is explicitly the plan.
Common questions
- What is a watch complication?
- A complication is any function on a watch beyond telling the local time. Date displays, chronographs, moon phases, perpetual calendars, GMTs, and tourbillons are all complications. Watchmakers loosely grade them as simple, useful, or grand depending on the engineering required.
- What is a grand complication?
- A grand complication is a watch that combines several high-end complications, traditionally a perpetual calendar, a chronograph, and a minute repeater, on a single movement. Grand complications represent the upper end of mechanical watchmaking and trade in five- to seven-figure ranges depending on brand and condition.
