Why it matters
A chronograph is a watch with a built-in stopwatch function. Pushers on the side of the case start, stop, and reset a center-mounted seconds hand and the small subdials. Beyond the engineering, chronograph is also a price signal: chronograph movements cost more to make and service than three-handers, and the mechanism is more vulnerable to damage from improper use.
For secondary-market buyers, a chronograph listing should include a working pusher demonstration. Stuck pushers, jumpy seconds hands, and subdials that fail to reset to zero are common defects on watches that sat unused for years. Servicing a chronograph movement runs higher than a standard automatic. Account for that in any deal under retail. The most-traded chronograph references are the Rolex Daytona, the Omega Speedmaster, and the Patek Philippe 5170 / 5172.
Common questions
- What is a chronograph watch?
- A chronograph is a watch that includes a stopwatch function operated by pushers on the case side. The center-mounted seconds hand and the small subdials measure elapsed time when the chronograph is running, separately from the main timekeeping.
- Are chronograph watches harder to service?
- Yes. Chronograph movements have more parts, tighter tolerances, and more wear points than standard time-only movements. Service intervals tend to be similar (every five to seven years for a daily worn watch) but the cost is higher, often 50% to 100% more than a basic automatic service.
