Rolex makes all their movements in-house - caliber 3235 in the new Sub.

Why it matters

An in-house movement is one designed, manufactured, and assembled by the watch brand itself rather than purchased from a movement supplier like ETA, Sellita, or Miyota. Brands market in-house calibers as evidence of vertical integration and craftsmanship. The term gets stretched in practice: some brands assemble bought-in components and call the result in-house, while others legitimately make every part from raw materials.

The practical question for buyers is whether in-house adds resale value. The answer depends on the brand and the buyer pool. Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, A. Lange & Söhne, and Vacheron Constantin all run truly in-house manufactures and command secondary-market premiums for it. Mid-tier brands that switched from ETA to in-house often see no premium, sometimes a discount, because the in-house caliber is younger, less proven, and more expensive to service. Service availability and parts supply matter more than the marketing label.

Common questions

What is an in-house movement?
An in-house movement is one designed and built by the watch brand itself rather than sourced from a third-party movement supplier. Brands use the term as a quality and craftsmanship signal, though the depth of in-house production varies widely between manufacturers.
Does in-house always mean better quality?
Not automatically. A well-executed in-house caliber is a real achievement, but a young in-house movement can be less reliable than a proven ETA or Sellita base that has been refined over decades. Service availability, parts supply, and track record matter as much as the in-house label.
